A new year is all about setting goals and reviewing how far you’ve come. Let me tell you about our goals and accomplishments.

We’ve tallied our planting numbers for the year and we’re proud to say that we’ve surpassed the 77 million tree mark (since 1992). This feat wouldn’t have been possible without the help of our partners, sponsors, donors and people like you. Thanks!

Our goal for 2011 is to communicate better with our supporters. Tree Canada is now on Facebook and Twitter. We’ve launched a new contest with a chance to win prizes from our sponsors. You can follow up on our activities there. We’re looking forward to hearing from you.

International Year of Forests
International Year of Forests The United Nations has declared 2011 as the International Year of Forests. The theme “Forests for People” has been chosen to celebrate the individuals who work for the sustainable management and conservation of forests worldwide. This year is an opportunity to champion forests and trees and their role in providing communities with clean air, acting as carbon sinks to mitigate climate change, and creating sustainable industries.

Tree Canada will be bringing you stories throughout the year from our experience in greening our nation.  Stay tuned.
National Tree Day
For the past few years, Tree Canada has worked hard to create a national day to recognize the benefits of trees in our communities. We’re now closer to that goal. In November, MP Royal Galipeau (Ottawa-Orléans) presented Motion M-575 in the House of Commons declaring the Wednesday of each National Forest Week (the last full week in September) as “National Tree Day.” The second reading of the bill takes place in early March - Tree Canada is hoping the bill will pass in early spring.

We encourage you to show your support for the Motion by writing to your MP.

Trees and Hockey: A Great Combination
On January 3rd, Molson Canadian donated $1,000 to Tree Canada as part of its Molson Cup presentation to Phil Kessel of the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Air Canada Centre. This donation is part of Molson’s program to plant 100,000 trees with us in 2011. Stay Tuned!

CUFC9 : A Great Success
CCFU9: Un grand succèsHundreds of arborists, urban planners and foresters attended the 9th Canadian Urban Forest Conference (CUFC) in beautiful Truro, NS this past October. Experts discussed the crucial link between “Water, Trees and Communities” and how to work together with NGOs and all levels of government to protect our urban forests and local watersheds. Thank you City of Truro for being such a great host!

At the conference, London, Ontario was

awarded the right to host the 10th CUFC in October 2012.

2012 will also be a special year for Tree Canada – it marks our 20th anniversary. And we plan to party! Keep posted on how we plan to celebrate our achievements over these 20 wonderful years. To read the presentations from CUFC9, visit here.

1 Million Trees in 1 Year – We Can Do It!
We’ve achieved a great goal – 77 million trees since 1992 and thank you for your great support during our Fall 2010 donation campaign.

During the International Year of Forests, we want to set our goal higher.  We plan to raise enough money to plant 1 million trees during 2011.

Every dollar from every donation to us – from our seedlings, tree kits, clothing and educational materials – is invested in our tree planting programs.

We want you to be part of a lasting legacy.

Donate here. Let the challenge begin!
